Person confesses to sex offences against children at summer camp
An individual who contaminated treats with sedative and provided them to youngsters at a summer camp in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual offenses against two children who were nine and 10.
Jon Ruben was arrested after eight children and one adult became sick at the facility in July.
The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a series of 17 offences when he was present at the judicial center on Friday.
Yet, he refused to admit one particular crime he was facing, which was involving a young boy.
The defendant was remanded in custody ahead of a additional proceeding on 28 November.
'Sweet game'
Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, detailed the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.
She explained his those affected were children from difficult backgrounds who were participating in a youth camp which he managed.
The man played a "sweet game" with the children, the prosecutor said, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were preparing to sleep and ask them to consume candy "as fast as possible".
She told the court the man had engaged in this activity with the young males "over an extended period", and children had earlier experienced illness the subsequent day.
She said the man had been successful in rationalizing this repeatedly as the minors being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepson had suspicions in recently.
The legal representative stated further: "This year his family member had worries about the activities, with valid cause.
"They resolved" to investigate in the individual's items."
The prosecutor stated items including infant oil, petroleum jelly and medical needles were located, and his stepchild alerted the police about his suspicions.
She explained Ruben went on to play the "treat game" with six boys that evening - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the subsequent day.
"Authorities" had not responded by that point," she continued.
The oversight body, the police conduct office, previously told that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.
The prosecutor said the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the stepson contacted the authorities once more.
She explained the defendant then engaged in the "candy game" in a area of five minors.
