White House Reveals Government Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Three-Week Mark
The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.
Formal Statement and Early Information
Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.
Although the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in court.
“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Funding Battle
Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be ended before then.
During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
Federal workers’ final pay that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Judicial and Practical Limits
Previously, unions filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.
A report contended that a funding lapse limits the ability of the government to carry out firings, referencing guidance that acknowledged any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.
Impact on Workers
The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the month.
Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.
“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” Stier said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”
The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
